How the calculator works
Factory tint is privacy glass, darkened in the glass itself. Window film stacks on top of it, so the light that gets through is roughly glass VLT × film VLT. Example: 20% privacy glass with 70% film is 0.20 × 0.70 ≈ 14%.
Film shades are nominal and glass varies by model, thickness and supplier, so treat every result as an estimate. Read the full explanation in factory tint vs window tint, or preview shades with the tint shade selector.
Want the factory look with less heat? Most owners choose 70% ceramic window tint (HiTek Ceramic IR) over the rear glass. Our mobile window tint service meters your glass free anywhere in San Diego County.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate tint over privacy glass?
Multiply the glass VLT by the film VLT. For example, 20% privacy glass × 70% film = 0.20 × 0.70 ≈ 14% combined VLT.
Will 70% film over factory tint look darker?
Only slightly. On 20% privacy glass, 70% film brings the result to about 14%, which most people can't notice from outside, while adding ceramic infrared rejection and a 99% UV layer.
How do I know my factory glass percentage?
Privacy glass varies by model and supplier (roughly 4.5% to 45% VLT per glass-maker data). A meter reading is the only way to know. BestAutoTechs meters your glass free with a mobile visit.
Is this calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate. Film shades are nominal and glass varies. The only number that counts is a meter reading of the installed glass and film together.
Does the math work on front windows too?
Yes. Film stacks on any glass. A 70% film on 80% front glass comes out around 56%, not 70%.
