San Diego Window Tint Laws 2026: VLT %, Fines & What's Actually Enforced

Fines: What You'll Actually Pay

• First offense (fix-it ticket): ~$25 base fine + $25 correction certification fee = $50 total
• Repeat offense or non-correction: $197+ infraction (no point on license)
• Commercial vehicles: Higher base fines, mandatory inspection

A "fix-it" ticket means you have to remove the illegal tint, get sign-off from a court-approved inspector, and pay the fee. Skipping this step turns the ticket into a full infraction.

Enforcement: Who's Actually Looking

• CHP on I-5, I-8, I-15: Most aggressive enforcement. Officers routinely use VLT meters during stops.
• SDPD downtown / Mission Valley: Will check tint during stops for other reasons (no proactive tint patrols).
• Sheriff in unincorporated areas (Poway, Ramona, etc.): Lower enforcement priority.
• Inspections at smog stations: California smog inspections do not check tint.
