Windshield Protection Film: The Honest San Diego Guide (2026)

Key Takeaway
Windshield protection film is a clear, replaceable layer on the outside of your windshield that takes everyday hits from small rocks and road grit before they reach the glass. ExoShield ULTRA is an 8-mil film with 91% light transmission, 99.9% UV rejection and a 3-year limited product warranty. It lowers the odds of chips but can't promise to stop every one. At BestAutoTechs it's $599 installed at your home or work on any vehicle with a pre-cut kit.

What windshield protection film is (and isn't)
Windshield protection film is a thin, optically clear film that goes on the outside of your windshield. It doesn't tint the glass or block heat. Its job is to be the first thing a pebble hits, so the dent, scratch or pit ends up in a replaceable film instead of in the glass.
ExoShield describes its films as a layered laminate: a nano-composite hard coat on top, a flexible shock-absorbing layer in the middle, and an ultra-clear adhesive underneath.[faq] The ExoShield ULTRA film we install is a PET film, the same family of polyester used in clear protective films. ExoShield also makes a TPU-based film (SPRINT), and that's what most people mean by "windshield PPF".[faq]

What it isn't:
- Not window tint. Tint goes on the inside of the glass to cut heat and glare. More on that below.
- Not a repair. It can't fix a chip or crack that's already there. ExoShield says ULTRA shouldn't go on a cracked or badly damaged windshield.[kit]
- Not permanent. It's a wear layer. It takes the beating, and when it's worn it can be removed and replaced.
How it works
Most rock chips start when a small, hard object hits the glass at highway speed and fractures the surface. A protection film puts a tougher, softer-to-break surface in the way:
- The hard coat (6H pencil hardness on ULTRA) resists everyday scratches from grit and wipers.[kit]
- The thick film layer (8 mil once installed, about 0.2 mm) absorbs and spreads some of the impact energy.[kit]
- The adhesive keeps the film bonded and clear across the whole windshield, so you see through it, not around it.
ExoShield ULTRA kits come pre-formed and pre-cut for your exact factory windshield. That's why fit is listed by year, make and model, and why the kits are designed for OEM (factory) glass. Fit isn't guaranteed on aftermarket glass.[faq]

Does windshield protection film actually work?
Honest answer: it lowers the risk, but it doesn't make glass chip-proof. Here's what that means in practice:
- Everyday hits: small rocks off a truck tire, gravel kicked up on a freeway on-ramp, sand blowing across a coastal road. These are what the film is built for. ExoShield calls ULTRA "heavy-duty" protection against daily impacts.[ultra]
- Big or sharp hits: a large rock, a sharp piece of debris or a hit near the edge of the glass can still chip or crack the windshield underneath. No film can promise otherwise, and we won't either.
- Scratches in the film: scratches show up on the film over time. ExoShield says they don't affect its impact resistance, and the film can be replaced when it's worn.[faq]
That's also why ExoShield's warranty covers the film, not the glass (see the warranty). Think of it like a phone screen protector: it takes a lot of hits that would have marked the screen, but it doesn't make the phone indestructible.
Who it's worth it for in San Diego, and who can skip it
Usually worth it if you:
- Drive a vehicle with a flat, upright windshield. ExoShield says ULTRA is ideal for off-road vehicles and flat, vertical windshields that need extra protection,[faq] which describes the Bronco, Wrangler and G-Class. Upright glass meets debris head-on instead of at an angle.
- Commute on I-15, I-5, SR-52 or SR-94 behind trucks and construction traffic, or drive the canyon and back-country roads out toward Ramona, Julian or Anza-Borrego.
- Just got a new windshield, especially one with a camera behind it. AAA's 2023 study found that recalibrating the windshield-mounted camera alone averaged about $360 of a typical windshield replacement estimate.[aaa23] Protecting new glass protects that spend.
- Own a truck, off-roader or sports car with factory glass you'd like to keep original.
- Want to keep the glass clean for resale or a lease return.
Probably skip it (for now) if you:
- Already have a crack or a large chip. Fix or replace the glass first, then protect it.
- Barely drive, or the car lives in a garage most of the week.
- Are selling the vehicle in the next few weeks.
- Drive a vehicle with no pre-cut kit and don't want to wait for a custom fit (see the custom-kit path).
ExoShield ULTRA specs in plain English
Every number below is published by ExoShield for its ULTRA windshield film.[kit][ultra]
| Spec | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| 8 mil installed (9 mil raw), about 60% thicker than ExoShield's GT3+ film | Their heavy-duty film, aimed at upright glass and rougher roads |
| 91% visible light transmission, 0.36% haze | Optically clear. Your view looks the same |
| 99.9% UV rejection | Blocks almost all UV coming through the windshield |
| 6H pencil hardness, nanoceramic top coat | Scratch-resistant surface. Sand on a dry windshield plus wipers can still scratch it |
| ADAS compatible, per ExoShield | Designed to work with lane-keep and auto-brake cameras and sensors |
| Pre-formed for factory (OEM) windshields | Exact fit on factory glass. Fit isn't guaranteed on aftermarket glass |
| Designed in Canada, made in the USA | — |
What ExoShield doesn't claim for ULTRA: heat or infrared rejection, or "self-healing". If you want heat rejection, that's tint (next section).

Windshield protection film vs. windshield tint vs. replacing the glass
People mix these up all the time, so here's the side-by-side:
| Windshield protection film (ExoShield ULTRA) | Windshield tint (clear ceramic film) | Windshield replacement | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it goes | Outside of the glass | Inside of the glass | Swaps the glass |
| Main job | Takes rock and grit hits for the glass | Cuts heat (infrared), UV and glare | Fixes glass that's already chipped or cracked |
| Looks | Clear | Clear to light shade | New glass |
| Lasts | Up to 24–36 months on average (replaceable)[faq] | Years (film quality matters) | Until the next big hit |
| Camera recalibration | Not needed for the film itself | Not needed for the film itself | Often required on vehicles with a windshield camera[aaa23] |
Can you have both? Yes. They go on opposite sides of the glass. Many of our customers already have windshield tint in San Diego for heat and add protection film on the outside for rocks. If heat is your main complaint, start with clear ceramic windshield film, or read up on ceramic window tint for the rest of the car and our ceramic IR vs carbon IR comparison.
Why not just replace the windshield when it chips? You can, but it adds up. AAA's 2023 study of three popular 2023 models put the average windshield replacement estimate at about $1,440, including roughly $360 to move and calibrate the camera.[aaa23] AAA's earlier research found more than 14.5 million windshields are replaced in the US every year, and noted that some automakers require factory glass to meet strict standards for optical clarity.[aaa18] Film doesn't replace insurance or repair, but it can save you some of those trips. (Check your own policy for glass coverage. That's between you and your insurer.)
How long it lasts, and how to care for it
Lifespan: ExoShield says to expect up to 24–36 months on average.[faq] Actual life depends on miles, roads, wiper condition and how you wash the car. It's a wear layer, so it's doing its job when it shows marks.
The first week (curing):
- For the first 48 hours, avoid wipers, rain and car washes when you can.[care]
- Full cure can take up to 7 days. Small water spots or slight haze while it cures are normal and go away. Parking in dry sun speeds it up.[care]
After that:
- Wash gently by hand, or use a touchless wash. No pressure washer on the windshield.[care]
- Use an ammonia-free (tint-safe) glass cleaner, and skip ammonia-based washer fluid.[care]
- Keep your wiper blades clean. Wipe them with a damp microfiber cloth now and then. Sand on the glass, not the wipers themselves, is what scratches film.[faq]
- If you ever need an ice scraper on a mountain trip, use a smooth plastic one, never metal.[care]
- If the film ever gets heavily scratched or hazy, have it replaced.[care]

Removal: the film comes off with gentle heat to soften the adhesive, and any residue cleans up with a remover such as diluted isopropyl alcohol.[faq] We'd rather do it for you so the glass and trim stay safe.
The warranty: what's covered and what isn't
ExoShield ULTRA comes with a 3-year limited product warranty from ExoShield when it's installed by an authorized ExoShield installer.[ultra][warranty]
Covered: manufacturing defects in the film, such as cracking, delamination, discoloration, hazing or yellowing. That includes removing and/or replacing the film when there's a covered defect. ExoShield's warranty terms list no mileage limit. It can transfer to the next owner for the rest of the warranty period if the film was registered to the vehicle, or if the new owner has the original invoice.[warranty]
Not covered: chips, cracks or breakage in the windshield glass, normal wear and tear such as scratches and stains, accident or hail damage, and damage from harsh chemicals or poor maintenance.[warranty] Following the care steps above protects your coverage.
How claims work with us: as your installer, we register the film and file any warranty claim with ExoShield for you. You call us, not a hotline.

- BMW 4 Series & M4, 2-door (G22/G23/G82/G83, 2021+): coupe and convertible only.

We've tinted plenty of these around the county already. For example, a Ford Bronco Big Bend in Ramona, a 2026 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon in Rancho Bernardo, an F-250 Super Duty in Rancho Bernardo, a GMC Yukon Denali with a clear windshield tint and a Porsche 911 Carrera T. Those were tint jobs, and now we can protect the windshield too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is windshield protection film worth it?
For most daily drivers on San Diego freeways, and especially for upright windshields (Bronco, Wrangler, G-Class) or new glass with a camera behind it, it's an inexpensive way to lower the odds of a chip. It's not worth it on glass that's already cracked, or on a car you're about to sell.
Does windshield protection film really stop rock chips?
It absorbs a lot of everyday impacts from small rocks and road grit, but no film can promise to stop every chip. A large or sharp hit can still damage the glass underneath.
How long does windshield protection film last?
ExoShield says to expect up to 24–36 months on average. How you wash the car and how clean you keep your wiper blades both matter. When it's worn, it can be removed and replaced.
How much does windshield protection film cost in San Diego?
At BestAutoTechs, ExoShield ULTRA is $599 installed on any vehicle with a pre-cut kit. You pay a $200 deposit to book, which is refundable if the kit doesn't fit, and the $399 balance after install. Custom kits are quoted separately.
Is windshield protection film the same as windshield tint or windshield PPF?
No. Protection film goes on the outside to take rock hits. Tint goes on the inside to cut heat and glare. "Windshield PPF" usually means a TPU film, while ExoShield ULTRA is a PET film. You can have film and tint at the same time.
Will it affect my view or my car's cameras?
ExoShield lists ULTRA at 91% visible light transmission with 0.36% haze, and designs it to be compatible with ADAS cameras and sensors.
Does the warranty cover my windshield?
No. ExoShield's 3-year limited product warranty covers manufacturing defects in the film, such as delamination, hazing or yellowing. It doesn't cover chips or cracks in the glass, or normal wear and scratches.
Can windshield protection film be removed?
Yes. It comes off with gentle heat, and any residue cleans up with a mild remover. We'll remove and replace it for you when it's worn.
